Is OmniCore Still Active in 2026?

    The Short Answer

Yes. OmniCore v0.13.0 is the latest release of the Omni Layer reference client. The protocol has operated on the Bitcoin blockchain without interruption since August 2013. Development continues on GitHub.

    What Happened

Between 2021 and 2025, several events reduced Omni Layer's visibility. Tether shifted USDT minting away from Omni to Ethereum and Tron in 2023, then formally ended Omni support in September 2025. The unrelated Omni Network project created confusion by sharing the "Omni" name — compounding the perception that the original protocol had disappeared. Omni Network has since rebranded to Nomina.

These events affected activity volume and public attention. They did not affect the protocol's functionality.

    What's Working

    • The Omni Layer protocol processes transactions on every Bitcoin block that contains them.
    • Token balances from 2013 onward remain intact and verifiable on the Bitcoin blockchain.
    • OmniCore v0.13.0 syncs, parses, and displays the complete Omni Layer state.
    • OmniDEX continues to settle trades on-chain.
    • Token creation remains functional — new tokens can be issued at any time.
    • The GitHub repository (github.com/OmniLayer/omnicore) contains the full source code under MIT license.

    What Changed

    • Transaction volume is lower than peak years (2017–2019).
    • Tether (USDT) is no longer minted on Omni Layer.
    • Fewer centralized exchanges actively list OMNI.
    • OmniWallet.org (hosted web wallet) is a legacy product — OmniCore is the active client.

    What's Next

OmniCore v0.13.0 marks the beginning of a renewed focus.

The protocol's value proposition remains unchanged: create and manage tokens on Bitcoin with 10+ years of production history, a built-in decentralized exchange, and the security of proof-of-work consensus.
