What is OmniCore?
OmniCore is the reference implementation of the Omni Layer protocol — a meta-layer built on top of Bitcoin that enables custom token creation, decentralized trading on OmniDEX, and blockchain-based crowdfunding.
Every OmniCore transaction is a Bitcoin transaction. The protocol embeds token data into standard Bitcoin operations, inheriting the security of the most audited blockchain in existence. No sidechain. No bridge. No separate consensus mechanism. Compare alternatives in our Bitcoin token protocols guide.
The Omni Layer launched as Mastercoin in 2013 — the first token protocol on Bitcoin and the origin of the first-ever ICO. It later powered the original minting of Tether (USDT) on Bitcoin. Today, the OmniCore v0.13.0 wallet download continues that legacy with active development and a complete feature set.
Note: Not to be confused with Omni Network, which rebranded to Nomina in September 2025. OmniCore is the Bitcoin-native protocol. What's the difference? →
One Wallet. Three Capabilities.
Built-in Block Explorer
See every token, every transaction, every balance — inside the wallet. No separate tool. No external dependency. OmniCore reads the full Omni Layer state directly from Bitcoin.
Explore the Explorer →OmniDEX
Trade any Omni Layer token for Bitcoin on a decentralized exchange that runs entirely on-chain. No intermediary. No account. No counterparty risk.
How OmniDEX Works →Token Creation
Create fixed-supply or managed-supply tokens on Bitcoin in a single transaction. Represent assets, currencies, or rights — secured by Bitcoin's proof-of-work.
Create a Token →Why OmniCore?
10+ years on Bitcoin.
The Omni Layer has operated continuously on the Bitcoin blockchain since August 2013. No downtime. No consensus failures. No chain splits.
Full-node security.
OmniCore runs as a full Bitcoin node — built on Bitcoin Core 0.20.1. You verify every block. You hold every key. No server between you and the network.
Open source.
Every line of code is public. Auditable. Forkable. The OmniCore repository has been open on GitHub since day one.
Complete protocol.
Token creation. Decentralized exchange. Crowdfunding. Multi-send. Built-in explorer. Other Bitcoin token protocols offer pieces. OmniCore delivers the full stack.
Bitcoin-secured.
Omni Layer transactions ARE Bitcoin transactions. Miners secure them. The blockchain records them. No additional trust assumptions.
How Does Omni Layer Compare?
Runes launched in 2024. Taproot Assets is in alpha. RGB is still in development. Omni Layer has processed tokens on Bitcoin for over a decade.
Every protocol makes trade-offs. We built a factual comparison so you can decide for yourself.
Compare Bitcoin Token ProtocolsThe OMNI Token
OMNI is the native token of the Omni Layer protocol. Total supply: 619,478 OMNI — created during the original Mastercoin crowdsale in August 2013. OMNI is used for transaction fees on the OmniDEX and as the protocol's foundational asset.
